Page Titles

The page title is the band between the header and the content: the heading, an optional subtitle, breadcrumbs, and a background that can be anything from a flat bar to a parallax image. Canvas renders it through the Page Title template part on every page, styled by one site wide decision and reshaped per page by the Page Title Settings panel, so a consistent site with a few showpiece exceptions is the natural outcome rather than an effort.

Site Wide Defaults

The site wide look, including the breadcrumbs behaviour, lives on the Page Title tab of Canvas > Theme Options. The Page Title options reference documents every setting on the tab. Decide the default there first, because every control in the per page panel starts on Inherit, and a good default means most pages never open the panel at all.

The Per Page Panel

The panel works top down. Enable Page Title switches the band off entirely, for landing pages and heroes. Style then chooses what kind of band this page gets:

  • Inherit follows the site wide default.
  • Default and Mini are the standard band at full and reduced height. For these two (and Inherit), the panel offers Alignment (Left, Center, Right) and Background (Theme Bar, None, Color, Static Image, Parallax, Pattern, Video). With an image, parallax, pattern or video background, Include Header additionally pulls the header down over the band, for the full bleed opening the photography designs use. That overlap is also what a transparent header sits on.
  • Template renders one of the prebuilt title layouts; pick it in the Template select that appears.
  • Custom replaces the band with a Page Title record you designed yourself; pick it in the Custom Page Title select. Records are built under Canvas > Theme Options, on the Page Title tab, through the Manage Page Titles link, and each is ordinary block content, so a custom band can be anything.

Color Scheme (Light or Dark) applies to every style except Custom, where the record brings its own design.

A band built from the Page Title block, in a record or in the Page Title template part, can take its background image, tiling pattern or video by URL rather than from the media library, with a second video format and a poster frame beside it, which is what lets a designed band travel between sites as a pattern. Choose its Boxes layout variant and a Cards repeater appears for the quick action cards under the title, each row holding an icon, a title, a description and a link. The Page Title block reference lists every one of its settings.

The Content section rewrites what the band says without touching the page itself. Custom Title and Custom Subtitle override the displayed text, while the page keeps its real title everywhere else. Show Subtitle, Show Breadcrumbs and Show Entry Meta are three state selects: - Global Default - inherits the site wide option, Show and Hide override it, and that middle state is why they are selects rather than checkboxes. Under breadcrumbs, Breadcrumb Label gives this page a shorter name inside the trail, and Breadcrumb Parents inserts section crumbs between Home and this page, one Add Crumb at a time, for pages whose logical place is deeper than their URL.

The trail itself is drawn by the Page Title Breadcrumbs block, which carries the same two ideas for the places a page cannot reach: Section Crumbs and Current Crumb Label are how an archive template names its trail, and a Separator and a Home Crumb Icon set the trail's own look. A page that fills in Breadcrumb Parents replaces the section crumbs the block states, so make the page's own entry whenever one page differs from the template it renders through.

The Style Overrides section closes the panel with direct paint: Background Color, Background Image, Text Color, Vertical Padding and Row Classes, each inheriting while empty.

Buttons In The Band

A separate Page Title Buttons panel, in the main editor column, adds call to action buttons under the title: a Buttons repeater (Add Button per row), shared Button Classes, Row Classes for the row wrapper, and Button Row Position, which offers Under the title or Beside the title for designs that balance the heading with an action at the far side of the row. Leave a button's URL empty and it renders a scroll trigger instead of a link, which is the intended way to point the band at the content below it.

Pitfalls

The panel hides what does not apply, shares one switch with the Hero panel, and answers to the header above it:

  • Alignment and Background are missing. They are offered only for the Inherit, Default and Mini styles. A Template brings its own layout and a Custom record brings its own everything, so there is nothing for them to control.
  • Include Header is missing. It appears only with an image, parallax, pattern or video background, because over a flat bar there is nothing to overlay the header on.
  • The band is gone and Enable Page Title is off, but you never touched it. The Hero panel's "Hide page title on this page" checkbox writes this same setting, because heroes usually replace the band. Turning either back on turns both back on; they are one switch with two doors.
  • Breadcrumb fields are missing. They hide while Show Breadcrumbs is Hide, since a hidden trail has nothing to label.
  • The header is solid on a page whose header you set to transparent. A transparent bar needs something under it, and a band with Include Header on is one of the things that count, along with a hero and an assigned slider. With none of them present Canvas renders the header solid so the logo and menu stay legible, as Header Options Per Page sets out.

When a page opens with a full designed section instead of a title band, that is a Hero. The reference for the record type behind the Custom style is Page Titles.
